Say No To Yes Men Michael Jordan

One of my favorite NBA players of all time is Michael Jordan. Sadly his basketball skill, genius, and will to win have not translated well to the business side of things. His Charlotte Bobcats made history by completing the worst season ever. Some speculate he is surrounded by yes men who don’t challenge His Airness. I hate conflict and disagreements and through the years I have had my share. But seeing MJ struggle so mightily with basketball operations, I have a better appreciation for conflict, opposing views, and constructive criticism. He dominated on the court, but it’s obvious to see that there are more players involved in running a NBA franchise.

Michael if you are reading this, please clean house this off season and surround yourself with basketball people who are strong enough to stand up to you. For everyone else, if you want more success in whatever you do, how is your team and support system? Are you surrounded by yes men? If you are, you too need to clean house and align yourself with intelligent, hardworking people who are also strong enough to check and balance you. You may not help a franchise win a NBA championship, but you will take one step closer to success.

Stay Inspired!

  1. Well said Buck. We can learn so much about what we should do and how we should be when people challenge us. Getting through that challenge and finding conviction is what allows us to be successful. I definitely seek out critique and ways that I can do things differently. Life is a learning journey.

Michael Jordan may be using the franchise to reduce his taxes. I am sure that he is doing fine in his other investments. Do you think he is involved in the day-to-day running of the team?

  3. I think Michael Jordan also has to be strong enough to accept opposing viewpoints. I suspect that he isn’t. Of course I’m speculating, but it’s quite possible that MJ thinks he knows as much about running a business as he does about playing basketball. Clearly, he does not.

  5. yes… yes….. yes – I don’t like conflict, but am better for receiving criticism. No one excels by complete agreement! I liked this article.

  6. Being surrounded by “Yes Men” is definitely a recipe for challenging work environment. If the people around you don’t have the courage to stand up to you, everyone is harmed. It’s is all quite toxic. Like you, I also have no idea what is going on and seriously hope that MJ can pull it together.
