BI 036: Control What You Can Ned Colletti!

With the signing of Zack Greinke to his six-year, $147 million contract the expectations for the Dodgers have gone sky high. (I really should have thrown the baseball more when I was younger.) Linda Cohn from ESPN interviewed LA Dodger general manager Ned Colletti and asked him how he plans to do with the higher expectations. (When I was younger a close friend told me to just worry about the things you can control.) Colletti takes it one step further and points to three specific items you can control when you are not concerning yourself with the things you can’t. Not only can this be applied to the game of baseball, it can be applied to every aspect of life.

What are the things in life you can control that you focus on?

I can control me! Literally, I am the only one I can control or do anything to make me better. Everything outside is much more difficult to control.

Sports contracts have gone to absurd limits I think, and not just the fans pay for it. I was reading the other day that over half of our cable and satellite bills pay for sports channels. It’s kind of unfair for those of us who rarely watch any sports. I’d like to see the “menu” option where we can pick the channels we want and pay only for those. I’d have less than 30 I’d say.

Sports contracts are insane, but in the big picture, sports teams rake in billions. Guess they’re just trying to get their fair slice of the pie. I never thought about it like that. It is unfair to be paying for channels that you won’t even watch for a second.
