Medical Insurance Baby Lifesaver

I’ve been a father for more than a month and my body is finally adjusting to the lack of sleep. What also happens after a month of fatherhood are the medical bills. Specifically, my insurance company broke down services rendered while my wife was in labor and for my newborn son. I’ve read countless articles about how expensive it is to raise a child. How about how expensive it is to have a child? All our expenses added up to $40,000! Although I had a HMO Nightmare, you won’t hear me complaining this time.

Final Thoughts

I’m fortunate my HMO insurance will take care of everything but my deductible. But I wondered, does it really cost that much? I looked closer at my bill. Thousands of dollars for my wife’s hospital stay, two thousand dollars for an epidural, and additional thousands of dollars for my baby’s hospital stay. I’m forever grateful for their service as I have a healthy baby boy. But is healthcare a scam? I should really watch Michael Moore’s Sicko to find out.

  1. Congrats, and glad you’re adjusting!

U.S. healthcare isn’t a scam, unless you characterize as ‘scammy’ the normal machinations of any for-profit industry.

Medical costs are out of sight. The doctor receives very little of the fees. The insurance company is the only one who does well in these situations.

Incredible costs, but very believable. When my son was born in 1977, my wife and I paid as we went for prenatal treatment and saved up for delivery costs and I don’t whether the total came to more than $2000. Even when my 3 daughters were born in the 80s I never had health insurance and paid out of the pocket for everything and I don’t think costs came to more than $2000 for any of them. I don’t know how people can have kids without insurance these days, but on a typical wage I don’t know how most people can afford health insurance on their own either.

  4. Man $40,000? Maybe that is why health insurance is so expensive. Think how many kids are born every year!

I heard from a friend it cost her about $20,000 to have a baby so $40,000…OUCH! Glad to hear you’ll get everything covered except the deductible and your son is healthy. CONGRATS on becoming a dad!!

  6. $40k? WOW, as bad as Canada’s healthcare system is I am glad we have it. My wife spent 2-3 days in the hospital and it didn’t cost us a penny. I wonder where all that money goes!
